'Everything over here is a problem': Seniors fed up with conditions at Memphis apartments 'Everything over here is a problem': Seniors fed up with conditions at Memphis apartments
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tenants at Memphis Towers, many of them senior citizens, said they are fed up with living conditions at the complex. Residents said each night they are without hot water for hours.
“(There are) homeless people coming in the building. The doors are not fixed. The doors are broken. Anybody can walk in at night,” said Geraldine Brown, a resident.
Memphis Towers is managed by Millenia Housing Management, which also oversees the Serenity at Highland apartments where some seniors have gone without air-conditioning for nearly a month.
The management company stated the air-conditioning at Serenity at Highland has been repaired and they hope to have freon put into the unit by Friday.
Meanwhile, resident at Memphis Towers also complain of mold, mice, water leaks and bed bugs.
“(There are) people not on the lease going in the back on the patio defecating and urinating on the patio. We can’t use the grills back there, but they can go back and urinate and defecate,” said Brown.
Fox13 reported on a lawsuit back in 2018 concerning Memphis Towers in which tenants complained of unsanitary water and mold.
Millenia Housing Management sent Fox13 the following statement concerning Memphis Towers:
The hot water is on at Memphis Towers. Several weeks ago, the primary boiler went down, affecting hot water service to all units. The team immediately found a temporary trailer-mounted boiler to provide service to the apartment complex; however, there have been intermittent issues with the ignition, causing temporary disruptions in hot water service. To solve for this, the team at Memphis Towers has the vendor on call 24/7, and the technician has replaced the ignition twice since installing the temporary boiler. Given the recurring issues with the temporary system, the team has asked the vendor to develop an alternative solution that may involve replacing more parts or bringing in a new temporary boiler (a new boiler is on order). The team expects to learn more about the recommended solution tomorrow morning.
Again, a new boiler is on order, and the apartment development is currently undergoing a substantial rehabilitation. Construction costs total more than $17 million ($57,400 per unit). The construction on C Tower is complete, and residents are expected to move into newly renovated apartment homes this month. The project is approximately 45 percent complete and includes the following (photos of the new construction are attached).
Millenia Housing Management sent Fox13 the following statement concerning the Serenity at Highland apartments:
The parts have been replaced. Now, the vendor is conducting a pressure test overnight. Once the pressure test passes, the drying out process will begin (estimated tomorrow). Once dried out, the freon will be added (expected Friday).
